Finding the Right Makeup Artist or Beauty School

  • •  Determine what type(s) of makeup artistry you want to pursue (beauty, fashion, wedding, special effects, etc.).
  • •  Get expert advice from at least three professional makeup artists. Seek them out locally or via phone or Internet/email.
  • •  Research at least five different schools. Decide which makeup courses and programs interest you.
  • •  Find a school that fits your budget—determine the costs (tuition, tools, materials, etc.) and inquire about financing options.
  • •  Visit at least three schools and take a tour.
  • •  Ask the school whether all their makeup artist instructors are working professionals in the industry. Ask whether they’re showing students the latest techniques.
  • •  Take as many classes as you can. Obtain a certification.
  • •  Seek out working professionals you can assist. Learn from their expertise and guidance.
  • •  Practice, practice and practice some more!
