China Regenerative Medicine International (CRMI) has acquired Obagi Medical Products from Valeant Pharmaceuticals for $190 million in cash. CRMI, which operates seven production plants in mainland China and Hong Kong, specializes in the research, development and commercialization of innovative bio-medical, healthcare products and medical techniques. In a press release, the company noted that this acquisition will help pave the way for future development of its cosmeceutical business in both the U.S. and international markets.

Obesity is associated with an increased risk of rosacea in women, according to a new study published in the December 2017 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. Authors Suyun Li, PhD, et al, identified 5,249 cases of rosacea diagnosed from 1991-2005 among 89,886 women who participated in the Nurses’ Health Study II. They found significant correlation between rosacea risk and higher body mass index (≥35), particularly among those who had gained weight after age 18.

Kate Ricciardi has been hired as the new marketing project manager for skincare manufacturer Skinprint. Ricciardi is a recent graduate of Hofstra University. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Journalism with a minor in Public Relations and worked as an intern with CBS News and the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. In addition to developing and executing all e-commerce projects, Ricciardi will be responsible for the company’s website (skinprint.com) and all social media campaigns.

A new study, published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology (November 2017), found that pulsed dye lasers (PDL) and the MaxG Optimized Light Handpiece (500-670nm and 870-1200nm) offer the best outcomes for patients with facial telangiectasia. Lin Gao, MD, et al, of the Xijing Hospital department of dermatology in Xi’an, China, performed a retrospective analysis of 416 patients with facial telangiectasia who were treated by PDL or IPLs in their department from August 2012 to March 2015.

Magee Jr., MD, and his wife Kathy founded Operation Smile in 1982 following a medical mission to the Philippines. Thirty-five years later it has provided hundreds of thousands of surgeries to children with cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities via 160 annual medical missions at 29 international care centers.
