Cold Weather Beauty Care

I love autumn but…

Colder weather requires TLC from head to toe. Not only does your skincare routine demand a change, but so does your makeup! Skin tones lighten as tans fade; skin becomes drier due to blistery outdoor air and equally moisture-sucking indoor heaters; cuticles dry out and lips chap. Depending on where you live in the country you’ll need to adjust and make some dry skin beauty product purchases. Think: emollient and hydrating.

Here is a beauty grocery list to ensure your skin and makeup shine all season long:

1. A creamy soap and a creamy face cleanser to remove makeup
2. A rosewater skin freshener (skip alcohol-based products if you can; they tend to further dry out skin)
3. An oil-based moisturizer (if you have normal or dry skin—but if you have oily skin, don’t banish moisturizers; look for something light)
4. Eye cream or eye gel (yes, even under eyes and lids get dry)
5. Rosebud lip salve to moisturize lips, cuticles, and chapped skin
6. A gentle sloughing lotion for exfoliating (use this weekly!)
7. A hydrating face masks (use once a week)
8. Eucalyptus and...

Brow Specialist Elke Von Freudenberg Offers Up Brow Tips For Men

While runway trends continue to dictate that women will be coveting a thicker brow, men tend to have the problem of maintaining and keeping their already very thick brows from growing all-out bushy. But it doesn't have to be that hard. While brows are different for men than for women, a lot of the tricks that women do to keep their brows in check can also be practiced by the guys to ensure their manly brows look clean and neat—and never feminine.

See a Pro. Most men wouldn't dream of setting foot into a spa or salon to get those brows under control, but seeing a pro shouldn’t intimidate them. The No.1 request of male clients is the plea to not have a “girl” brow done or, in other words, a perfectly shaped and arched brow. Men: Do your research before making that appointment. Ask to see if there's any before-and-after photos of male clients that have had their brows done so you can assess the actual work. Don't be afraid to speak up for what you want or don't want. Pros: If you’re not asking your male clients enough questions to make sure you're giving them exactly what they want, start now! As you know, badly done brows take forever to grow...

Makeup Artist Noreen Young Spends a Spa Day in Paris...Las Vegas!

The Eiffel tower, the decadent patisseries, the shopping, spas and oh so much more—I adore Paris! After a day of shopping and gambling—yes, gambling!—I retreat to a peaceful place. Yes, I am in Paris; however, it’s the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas. If you’ve never been, now is the time. I love the Paris Hotel and its lovely casino, but now I'm getting acquainted with its spa, the Paris Spa by Mandara!

The faux Eiffel Tower literally towers over this beautiful hotel, and to scoot from place to place within its confines, you travel along cobblestone streets—just like Europe! My meandering through these Parisian streets leads me to the spa, where, upon entering, I’m charmed by the kind and caring staff member that greets me. She allows me to peruse the menu and decide what I really want to partake in. She is not at all pushy.

She notices I have a fresh haircut, nice manicure and says my skin is lovely. She isn’t sure what I want. I chose the “Day Pass,” which for $25 allows me to relax and renew in the spa from that morning until 7 p.m. that weekday evening. Viva la value!

In this oasis, it feels as though I’m...

Makeup Artist Noreen Young Shares Budget-Conscious Beauty Tips

Times are not terribly great…however there is a bright and beautiful side to everything! Though you may not have the greenbacks to get you the best beauty services, products and treatments out there and often, where there’s a will, there’s always a way. My view of it all: You really don’t have to sacrifice to look your best. And you don’t want to let yourself go to pot when the going gets rough because looking good feels fabulous, whether you work in corporate America, you paint faces (like I do!) or you’re a stay at home mom. Don’t let yourself go from head to toe by adopting some of these recession-savvy beauty ideas:

Sundays are fun days. The Sunday newspaper is filled with coupons and ads for beauty and/or specials on fashion! Examples of coupons: nail lacquer, hair color, body wash, mascaras, foundations and more—oh my!

Sign up online or by snail mail for a spa or salon newsletter. They now more than ever offer specials on services—especially a half-day or day of beauty. Some packages are simply irresistible.

Go to events. Your business-savvy local plastic...

Makeup Artist Mathias Alan Shares His Fall 2011 “Makeup On the Run” Report: Adventurous Lips

Sure, we’re already being bombarded with the Spring 2012 Beauty Trends, but, let’s get real: Spring is a ways off, and we shouldn’t forget the Fall 2011 Beauty Trends that will keep one and all gorgeous for autumn and winter. The fall clothing collections always usher in a new wave of inspiring makeup trends that differ from the brightness and airiness of spring and summer. I love how during the autumn months, makeup artists and women alike pay more attention to the eyes and lips, lavishing them in darker hues. This fall I spotted a specific makeup trend that I want to share with you this month: Adventurous Lips.

Spring 2012 Brow Trends: Bold, Brushed-up, Thin or Mussed?

As you’ve seen from our Spring 2012 backstage beauty coverage, next season’s makeup, hair and nail trends are coming fast and furious. The newest trends to hit your beauty vanity next spring are showing up left and right, and one area of the face that’s receiving major play is the eyebrow.

Brows are thicker than ever and the quicker you can get yours growing in, the better. Not only are brows fuller, but also backstage beauty maestros are finding new ways of showing them off. Check out this primer so your arches are on point next spring.

Brush Your Brows Up
Did you think Brooke Shield’s bushy brows were on their way out? Certainly not, especially with the continued popularity of “It” model Arizona Muse (above). As a trend, this style sticks, namely because brushed-up brows make normal arches look thicker, which is a sign of youth. But now, this look is being intensified. Get out your brow wax and brow gel: Brushed-up eyebrows are the way to go next spring.

Makeup Artist Mathias Alan Transforms E! Networks’ The Soup Producer into Courtney Stodden

Recently I had a creative makeup-and-hair twist handed to me on my weekly television series, The Soup, for E! Networks. The producers and writers of the show asked me if I could transform one of our associate producers, Kelly Levy, into newly infamous child-bride Courtney Stodden. If you’re unaware, Courtney has been soaking up her 15 minutes of infamy due to the fact that she’s a 16-year-old girl who just married a 51-year-old actor named Doug Hutchison. Their July 2011 TV interview with Lara Spencer on Good Morning America ignited a storm of accusations that the 16 year old had a few screws loose, or was possibly high on some illegal substances. Her eyes rolled back in her head, her neck was loose and flaccid, and her lips puckered uncontrollably. It’s sadly hilarious to watch, and her mannerisms are so comedic that an impression of her was destined to pop up on The Soup.

The day that The Soup needed me to “re-create” Stodden’s doppleganger wasn’t a usual taping night. I normally go into E! at around 6:30 p.m.,...

Makeover Your Makeup Bag For Travel

I travel for beauty and my work. I love the unexpected treasures and beauty I find wherever I go. In my travels in town or out, I love to watch women go about their day…you know, people watch. On an airplane, the women fascinate me; their purses are huge and, not surprisingly, so are their cosmetic bags. You’d be amazed at the state these makeup bags—and their contents—are in!I see some women using products that are dirty-looking and old; women peering at their reflection in makeup-coated, shattered mirrors (very dangerous, ladies!); women gingerly applying eyeliner pencils that are worn down to the splintered wood, on the verge of scratching the cornea of their eyes. So, I had to share with you how to de-clutter your cosmetics bag, stress less and travel beautifully!

As a professional makeup artist, I have to travel with many supplies, but your average beauty lover can take much less. Even when you’re taking very little makeup with you, think practically. I have a gorgeous Gucci cosmetics bag I bought in Italy, but guess what? I have a confession: I found it’s too small and so gorgeous that I don’t use it. I leave...

Need for Speed: Makeup Artist Maria C. Scali Shares the Tools That Rev Up Your Makeup Application Time

I don’t care if you’re keying a TV show, working with A-list celebs, jamming backstage at a fashion show or doing bridal makeup on a special day; the bottom line is there’s always a rush to get the job done. Time is money, and it always seems that makeup artists never have enough time to craft their work. And if you think you’re working at your max, I guarantee you can still shave minutes off your of application time with the addition of some tools and products that will make your job that much easier.

Shadow Shields
Shadow Shields are a life- and time-saver. Remove the backing from these half-moon adhesives, and adhere them under the eyes. These handy tools will block any errant shadow or eyeliner that falls from creating a mess under the eye. If you like to apply foundation and concealer before you paint the eyes, these are a godsend! When you’re done applying your shadow and liner, peel the Shadow Shields off, and...voila! No mess to clean up and need to redo your...

Dial “M” For Makeup: Period Makeup Transcends Time And Finds Itself On Today’s Runways

I’ve always had a fascination with period makeup looks from the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s—makeup looks that have launched some of today’s most beautiful and wearable trends. Just as the most stunning beauty trends find their footing on red carpets today, these period looks were inspired by the glamorous celebrities of that time. Having been a huge fan of these decades’ past looks, I always wanted to put my skills to work recreating them—and my dream of doing so came true in a big way in 2003, when I had the opportunity to work on my first feature film as an assistant makeup artist for background on The Aviator, a period piece set in the 1930s. I was given a binder filled to the brim with makeup looks from the ’30s and told to recreate them on the background actors. It was exhilarating and surreal getting sucked into a different time period while on set! In the film, Gwen Stefani plays Jean Harlow, who was America’s sex symbol of the ’30s. Just emerging from the flapper-girl era, women were drawn to makeup looks that were all about romanticized mystery:...
