Cold Weather Beauty Care

I love autumn but…

Colder weather requires TLC from head to toe. Not only does your skincare routine demand a change, but so does your makeup! Skin tones lighten as tans fade; skin becomes drier due to blistery outdoor air and equally moisture-sucking indoor heaters; cuticles dry out and lips chap. Depending on where you live in the country you’ll need to adjust and make some dry skin beauty product purchases. Think: emollient and hydrating.

Here is a beauty grocery list to ensure your skin and makeup shine all season long:

1. A creamy soap and a creamy face cleanser to remove makeup
2. A rosewater skin freshener (skip alcohol-based products if you can; they tend to further dry out skin)
3. An oil-based moisturizer (if you have normal or dry skin—but if you have oily skin, don’t banish moisturizers; look for something light)
4. Eye cream or eye gel (yes, even under eyes and lids get dry)
5. Rosebud lip salve to moisturize lips, cuticles, and chapped skin
6. A gentle sloughing lotion for exfoliating (use this weekly!)
7. A hydrating face masks (use once a week)
8. Eucalyptus and...

Dermalogica Preps Skin for the Vampires of Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2

If you thought the undead needed to stop caring about their skin, think again: Dermalogica is once again the skincare brand of choice for Breaking Dawn, part of the unstoppable Twilight Saga series, which was filmed in Vancouver, B.C., Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Key makeup artist Jean Ann Black led the large makeup department for this installment with a broad range of Dermalogica products chosen to keep the cast’s skin healthy and visually consistent under a variety of shooting conditions. “Twilight” favorites in the makeup-trailer include mediBac Clearing Kit, Concealing Spot Treatment, Soothing Shave Cream, Clearing Skin Wash, Active Moist and Soothing Eye Make-up Remover. Brow Specialist Elke Von Freudenberg Offers Up Brow Tips For Men

While runway trends continue to dictate that women will be coveting a thicker brow, men tend to have the problem of maintaining and keeping their already very thick brows from growing all-out bushy. But it doesn't have to be that hard. While brows are different for men than for women, a lot of the tricks that women do to keep their brows in check can also be practiced by the guys to ensure their manly brows look clean and neat—and never feminine.

See a Pro. Most men wouldn't dream of setting foot into a spa or salon to get those brows under control, but seeing a pro shouldn’t intimidate them. The No.1 request of male clients is the plea to not have a “girl” brow done or, in other words, a perfectly shaped and arched brow. Men: Do your research before making that appointment. Ask to see if there's any before-and-after photos of male clients that have had their brows done so you can assess the actual work. Don't be afraid to speak up for what you want or don't want. Pros: If you’re not asking your male clients enough questions to make sure you're giving them exactly what they want, start now! As you know, badly done brows take forever to grow...

Makeup Artist Noreen Young Spends a Spa Day in Paris...Las Vegas!

The Eiffel tower, the decadent patisseries, the shopping, spas and oh so much more—I adore Paris! After a day of shopping and gambling—yes, gambling!—I retreat to a peaceful place. Yes, I am in Paris; however, it’s the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas. If you’ve never been, now is the time. I love the Paris Hotel and its lovely casino, but now I'm getting acquainted with its spa, the Paris Spa by Mandara!

The faux Eiffel Tower literally towers over this beautiful hotel, and to scoot from place to place within its confines, you travel along cobblestone streets—just like Europe! My meandering through these Parisian streets leads me to the spa, where, upon entering, I’m charmed by the kind and caring staff member that greets me. She allows me to peruse the menu and decide what I really want to partake in. She is not at all pushy.

She notices I have a fresh haircut, nice manicure and says my skin is lovely. She isn’t sure what I want. I chose the “Day Pass,” which for $25 allows me to relax and renew in the spa from that morning until 7 p.m. that weekday evening. Viva la value!

In this oasis, it feels as though I’m...

Ricky's Revolver Salons Offer Zombie and Vampire Makeovers for Halloween

Sure, those who revel in Halloween typically love this ghoulish holiday because they dig buying the costume, the wig and the blood-and-gore kits. But the truth is: Not everyone can masterfully do their special effects to look like The Walking Dead. Ricky's Revolver Salons in NYC are stepping in to help all wannabe zombies and vampires with a service menu of makeovers, including a bullet hole, vampire bite, large zombie bite or large gash—each only $25! Or, those who want to go all six-feet-under in can opt for the Full Makeover, which includes makeup, blood and scar putty touch up for $45. Totally killer...

Miss Piggy is on fire! First she gets an OPI nail polish line, then a fashion-saturated editorial in the November issue of InStyle magazine, and now she's aligned herself with makeup artist favorite, MAC Cosmetics! Makeup Artist Noreen Young Shares Budget-Conscious Beauty Tips

Times are not terribly great…however there is a bright and beautiful side to everything! Though you may not have the greenbacks to get you the best beauty services, products and treatments out there and often, where there’s a will, there’s always a way. My view of it all: You really don’t have to sacrifice to look your best. And you don’t want to let yourself go to pot when the going gets rough because looking good feels fabulous, whether you work in corporate America, you paint faces (like I do!) or you’re a stay at home mom. Don’t let yourself go from head to toe by adopting some of these recession-savvy beauty ideas:

Sundays are fun days. The Sunday newspaper is filled with coupons and ads for beauty and/or specials on fashion! Examples of coupons: nail lacquer, hair color, body wash, mascaras, foundations and more—oh my!

Sign up online or by snail mail for a spa or salon newsletter. They now more than ever offer specials on services—especially a half-day or day of beauty. Some packages are simply irresistible.

Go to events. Your business-savvy local plastic...

Photographer Tim Petersen Shoots for America's Next Top Model Tonight!

One of my favorite parts of my job is working with and interviewing amazingly talented beauty photographers. And one such lensman, Tim Petersen, will be lending his meticulous eye for beauty on America's Next Top Model TONIGHT! From what I gather, the shoot is based on the late pop icon Michael Jackson, and as we already saw from the sneak peak trailer last week, LaToya Jackson will be a guest on the show (guest judging too, possibly?).

If you haven't viewed Petersen's work with Beauty Etc., take a look back at "Subterranean Dreamscape" in the Spring 2011 issue. It is darkly haunting and absolutely breathtaking.

Can't wait to tune in and see...
